Small men try to make an argument with God. Like Job, they say, “If God were human, I could answer him; we could go to court to decide our quarrel” (9:32, GNB).
Putting God in His place
Human frailty wants to contend with the indestructible God. We envy Him and how good He has it. We figure if He could suffer the way we do, He would understand us better. While Job was wrong to try to size God up for a fight, he was onto something very powerful.
You need a go-between. You need an advocate. You need someone who can mediate the differences between you and God. Job said, “But there is no one to step between us” (9:33). Now there is.
God, in our place
God came to earth in the man Christ Jesus to step between us. While we never can change God from who He is, He took on the form of man. He came to suffer our life.
Jesus took on more suffering than any human. Job lost his children and his wealth. God in Christ suffered rejection by all His children. He laid aside the luxury of heaven to share our dirt and pain. Beyond just having close friends who blaming Him for His suffering, Jesus endured those who laughed at Him and enjoyed the scene.
For there is one God, and there is one who brings God and human beings together, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself to redeem the whole human race. (I Timothy 2:5-6)
The cure for Small Man Syndrome
Sir, you will never overcome you symptoms until you admit the disease. Job suffered from a temporary God-complex. He thought he could take God to court and win. He thought God had to answer for His actions. When we come to our senses, we will admit with Job that we are just clay and God has the ability to crush us to dirt if He so chooses.
Instead of trying to hold God to account, we must give account of ourselves to God. We must admit our smallness and accept the blood, name, and Spirit of Jesus to make us into real men. Repent of your wicked pride. Identify with Jesus by taking on His name in water baptism. And become a new man when His Spirit fills you with awesome joy, love, and peace.
Begin your journey to true manhood.
